Acupuncture is an ancient healthcare discipline that dates back more than 4,000 years. It is used for both the treatment of and prevention of disease. Volumes have been written about how acupuncture works and what it treats. The language commonly used makes reference to chi, vital force, energy, channels, meridians, balance and imbalance. For those unfamiliar with these terms, acupuncture seems rather mysterious.
The simple, undeniable truth is; your body is self-healing. Left to its’ own devices, all the body does all day is reproduce, repair and replace cells: heart cells, liver cells, skin cells, and yes, even brain cells. It is only when destruction exceeds reproduction that we have discomfort, dis-ease and degeneration.
Acupuncture accesses that part of your nervous system that promotes cellular reproduction and repair. Repair takes time, especially given our active lifestyles. Therefore, acupuncture usually involves a Course of Treatment. The number of treatments, and the spacing between, greatly influence your overall success. Once specific symptoms resolve, less frequent treatments can be incorporated into your personal health and wellness program.
Current
scientific research suggests that acupuncture activates a
mechanism of signal transduction through the connective tissue, with secondary
involvement of other systems, including the nervous system. Other studies, using
color imaging of the brain during acupuncture treatment, documented increased
activity in those areas that directly correspond to the traditional
understanding of the functions of specific acupuncture points.
Your
initial appointment includes an extensive interview,
review of symptoms, detailed health history, and physical observation. During
subsequent visits we re-evaluate and treatments are adjusted accordingly. We
specialize in gentle Japanese Meridian Therapy which means ultra-thin needles,
very shallow insertions and no needle stimulation. There is usually little or no
sensation upon insertion but later tingling or mild pressure may develop at the
site or elsewhere. This is a sign of increased blood circulation. You will most
likely enter a state of deep relaxation during the 10 to 30 minutes that the
needles are in place. For sensitive patients there are a number of
techniques that stimulate without needles.
One is called Hari, which means acupuncture in Japanese. Handcrafted gold and
silver tools are used to stimulate the treatment points and channels. This style
is appropriate for everyone but is especially beneficial for children and other
sensitive individuals because the needles do not penetrate the skin.
